“Higher Ground:” A Hymn About Enlightenment?

No. Of course this hymn, sung frequently in the Fundamentalist Evangelical church I attended, a loyal body of believers in an accredited house of worship of the Southern Baptist Convention, and yet one that was small enough to be “The Friendly Little Church on the Hill,” – this hymn sung there so frequently is definitely not about Enlightenment, nor should anyone construe it as being a hymn about such. Don’t you have any spiritual discernment at all?

I mean, just look at the lyrics:

I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I’m onward bound,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

Refrain:
Lord, lift me up and let me stand,
By faith, on Heaven’s tableland,
A higher plane than I have found;
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.

My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where those abound,
My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.

I want to live above the world,
Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled;
For faith has caught the joyful sound,
The song of saints on higher ground.

I want to scale the utmost height
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I’ll pray till heav’n I’ve found,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

See? Nothing there about Enlightenment at all. THIS IS A CHRISTIAN HYMN. No need to get all woo-woo and New-Agey and, in fact BLASPHEMOUS about it. Religion, and specifically the Christian religion – i.e., the ONLY TRUE RELIGION – is about faith, not works. Seeking Enlightenment is about works, not faith.

Don’t you know anything?

Also, it goes against authority, which is our basis for a sound, consistent Historical Christian Faith! You cannot hope to seek God with your own heart, going your own way, expecting some Special Insight from Heaven. It just does not work that way. Authority is vested by God in the Church and in those certified as Sealed by the Holy Spirit.

That does not mean everyone. Just like not everyone can, will, or should be super-rich. God Blesses Whom He Blesses, and the Rules for Whom He Blesses could not be plainer to those who Understand Him Aright. And that’s not some starry-eyed, socialist-hearted, liberal Enlightenment Seeker, is it?

No, if We allow that, it would be chaos. People would have their own crazy ideas about what God wants them to do with their lives. Furthermore, these newfangled ideas invented by Liberal Communist Scientists that question a Young Earth, the Literal Truth of Every Single Sentence of the Bible, and, not least in importance, the Supremacy of Certain Races Chosen by God for Manifest Destiny over Other Races … those “scientists” who bring up “facts” to throw centuries of American wisdom into doubt – THEY ARE JUST UNAMERICAN.

God has blessed our Church Leaders, especially those adhering to the tenets of the Historical Christian Faith as certified by themselves, and He has allowed us to prosper, and when we go astray, He has sent shepherds like Franklin Graham, Donald Trump, and all the Holy Televangelists to lead us back to the right path.

Who needs to seek “Higher Ground”? At least, who needs to seek it in terms that throw all this history, all this Biblical scholarship, all this spiritual discernment that was here long before you were born out the window?

Don’t be a fool.

Toe the line.

[This was all satire, by the way. I grew up in a church, however, whose beliefs were, and as far as I know are still, not very far from this. And yet, we sang “Higher Ground.” I have to wonder what we really thought it meant.]
